Attached is a patch initally submitted by Svante Signell
<***@gmail.com> at https://bugs.debian.org/767847. I'm uncertain
what's best to do in case of malloc failure so I haven't added a check at all.

This has been merged verbatim in: 497e0c07119c46485440b2fc28f727de855a2651

Slight alterations have been made in:
628d0d172068370e132c673778a76d532b6c9843

PTAL and close if this is ok. GWorkspace is independently broken for me, so I
can't try this out.

On a separate note... I'm not confident about making further cleanup changes
to the code touched in the patch -- although I *am* highly frustrated by its
unreadability. I'll raise a small discussion separately.
